Former Sierra Leone international footballer Lamin Bangura has tragically passed away at the age of 59 following a devastating road accident on Tuesday night. The incident occurred in the village of Konta Line, where a bus carrying Ports Authority FC, the team Bangura coached, collided with a stationary truck.

Bangura, who had been at the helm of Ports Authority FC since August 2021, was among those involved in the accident. Despite being rushed to a hospital in Freetown for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday.

The news of Bangura’s untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the Sierra Leone football community, with many expressing their disbelief and sorrow at the loss of a revered figure. Idrissa Tarawally, the secretary general of Ports Authority, described Bangura’s passing as a “sad day for Sierra Leone football,” highlighting the profound impact he had as both a player and a coach.

Bangura, a former center-back, played a pivotal role in Sierra Leone’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1994 and 1996. He also represented the national team at both tournaments, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s footballing history.

Amidu Karim, Sierra Leone’s national team coach and Bangura’s former teammate, paid tribute to the late footballer, referring to him as “a friend, brother, and mentor.” Karim fondly recalled Bangura’s influence on the younger players during their time together on the national team, emphasizing his status as a true legend of Sierra Leonean football.

Thomas Daddy Brima, president of the Sierra Leone Football Association, echoed similar sentiments, praising Bangura for his contributions to the sport both on and off the field. Brima also expressed concerns about road safety in the country, calling for urgent measures to prevent further accidents involving football teams.

Bangura’s legacy extends beyond his playing days, as he enjoyed success as a coach, guiding various teams to domestic titles and championships. His sudden and tragic death has left a void in Sierra Leonean football that will be difficult to fill.

As the football community mourns the loss of one of its beloved figures, arrangements are being made for Bangura’s funeral, scheduled to take place on Friday. His passing serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact of those who leave an indelible mark on the sport they loved.
