Kaizer Chiefs Defender Luke Fleurs Fatally Shot in Car Hijacking Incident

Luke Fleurs, a promising 24-year-old defender for Kaizer Chiefs, has been fatally shot during a car hijacking incident in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida when Fleurs was approached by armed assailants at a petrol station. According to reports from Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspects forcibly removed Fleurs from his vehicle and subsequently shot him once in the upper body.

Kaizer Chiefs released a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss of Fleurs’ life. The club extended its deepest condolences to Fleurs’ family and friends, emphasizing that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is handling the matter, and further details will follow in due course.

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, also expressed his condolences, highlighting the tragedy of yet another life cut short by violent crime and extending sympathies to Fleurs’ family, friends, and the football fraternity.

Luke Fleurs, who had represented South Africa at the Under-23 level and participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, had joined Kaizer Chiefs in October 2023 after stints with clubs like Ubuntu Cape Town and SuperSport United.

Former club SuperSport United paid tribute to Fleurs, expressing sadness at his passing and offering condolences to his family, friends, and everyone at Kaizer Chiefs.
