KFC Nigeria Apologizes Following Discrimination Incident at Lagos Airport

KFC Nigeria has issued an apology after a wheelchair user was reportedly denied service at one of its outlets in Lagos airport, sparking widespread outrage and prompting an investigation by authorities.

Adebola Daniel, son of former Nigerian state governor Gbenga Daniel, took to social media to express his frustration after allegedly being ordered to leave a KFC outlet at Lagos airport due to his wheelchair. The incident occurred at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria’s busiest airport, and quickly gained attention online.

In a detailed post on X, Daniel described the experience as “the worst sort of public humiliation” he had ever faced, stating that despite pleas from himself, his wife, and two brothers who were traveling with him, the manager of the KFC outlet refused to serve him, citing a policy against wheelchair users.

The post garnered significant attention and prompted an investigation by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), resulting in the closure of the KFC branch involved. FAAN also ordered KFC to issue an apology to Adebola Daniel and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to the incident, KFC Nigeria released a statement on X expressing regret for the distress caused to Mr. Daniel and his family. The statement outlined steps the company plans to take, including training employees on inclusive and empathetic customer service.

“We deeply regret the frustration and distress experienced by our guest and extend sincere apologies to those affected,” the statement read.

Additionally, FAAN mandated that KFC display a non-discrimination policy at the restaurant as a condition for reopening.
